UpSouth Shooting Sports Program

Structured, instructor-led initiative introducing youth ages 12–17 to organized shooting sports disciplines, including archery, shotgun (trap/skeet fundamentals), and rifle (air rifle / .22 where permitted).

 

The program prioritizes safety, skill progression, discipline, and sportsmanship, providing equitable access to high-quality instruction for youth from diverse backgrounds.

All activities are delivered by certified instructors and follow established youth shooting sports safety standards. The program is suitable for schools, parks & recreation departments, after-school programs, courts/diversion programs, and community organizations.

Program Objectives

  • Teach discipline-specific safety protocols across archery, shotgun, and rifle

  • Build foundational marksmanship skills through progressive instruction

  • Foster focus, emotional regulation, and accountability

  • Expand access to organized youth shooting sports and healthy competition

  • Create pathways to teams, leagues, leadership, and outdoor education careers

Target Participants

  • All Youth ages 12–17 (beginner-friendly; no experience required)

  • Priority for under-resourced or community partner referred youth

  • Cohort-based enrollment to support consistency and mentorship

Core Disciplines & Instruction

1. Archery (Recurve / Genesis-style)

  • Range safety and etiquette

  • Stance, draw, anchor, release, follow-through

  • Target scoring and accuracy tracking

  • Focus, breath control, and goal setting

2. Shotgun (Trap & Skeet Fundamentals)

  • Shotgun safety and range commands

  • Proper mount, stance, swing, and lead (age-appropriate)

  • Clay target fundamentals and sportsmanship

  • Emphasis on discipline, patience, and teamwork

3. Rifle (Air Rifle / .22 where permitted)

  • Safe handling, loading/unloading, storage

  • Sight alignment, trigger control, prone/bench positions

  • Precision target shooting and score progression

  • Individual improvement plans

Character & Life Skills Integration

  • Respect for peers, instructors, and equipment

  • Self-discipline, patience, and resilience

  • Healthy competition and teamwork

  • Leadership development through peer mentoring
